You Have More Than One Way to Get Divorced

Discussing divorce process options

Most people don’t want a divorce war.

They don’t want to spend a year or two fighting with someone they once loved. They don’t want their children’s lives consumed by conflict of divorce. And they certainly don’t want to spend a small fortune paying professionals to argue over the life they’ve spent years building.

Mostly, they want to get through the divorce without getting it wrong.

But here’s where things often go sideways:

People choose their professionals before they understand their process options.

Someone tells you to hire an attorney.

Your spouse hires one, so you think you need one too.

And suddenly you’ve entered a process neither of you consciously chose.

For some families, litigation is absolutely necessary. When there are safety concerns, an unwillingness to disclose information, an extreme power imbalance, or someone simply won’t participate honestly, the protection and authority of the court may be essential.

But many divorcing couples don’t need someone else to make their decisions.

They need help making good ones.

They need to understand the finances.

They need to know what decisions actually have to be made.

They need to think through what happens to the house, retirement accounts, cash flow, co-parenting decisions, support, taxes, and everything else that turns one household into two.

They need good information.

They need structure.

And sometimes they need help having conversations that are really hard to have on their own.

That’s different from needing someone to fight for them.

Mediation is one way to do that.

In our Informed Mediation™ process, the goal isn’t simply to get you to an agreement. It’s to make sure both of you have access to the information you need, understand the decisions in front of you, and have the opportunity to evaluate your options before making them.

You don’t have to agree about everything.

You don’t have to be friends.

And you certainly don’t have to trust each other blindly.

But if you’re both willing to participate honestly, provide information, do the work, and take responsibility for your decisions, you may not need to turn those decisions over to someone else.

Because there is a lot of territory between giving everything away and declaring war.

Before you decide who you’re going to hire for your divorce, understand the different ways you can get divorced.

Then choose the process that fits your family.

Your divorce. Your decisions. Your way forward.
